"Christ was not exclusive, and He had given special offense to the Pharisees by departing in this respect from their rigid rules. He found the domain of religion fenced in by high walls of seclusion, as too sacred a matter for everyday life. These walls of partition He overthrew. In His contact with men He did not ask, What is your creed? To what church do you belong? He exercised His helping power in behalf of all who needed help. Instead of secluding Himself in a hermit's cell in order to show His heavenly character, He labored earnestly for humanity. He inculcated the principle that Bible religion does not consist in the mortification of the body. He taught that pure and undefiled religion is not meant only for set times and special occasions. At all times and in all places He manifested a loving interest in men, and shed about Him the light of a cheerful piety."--The Desire of Ages, p. 86.  {ChS 123.1} 

On another occasion James and John rebuked a man who was preaching the gospel of Jesus, but was not an offical part of the disciple's band. Christ told them to be quiet and leave him alone. These words are as applicable now as when Christ first uttered them. Why did He say "leave him alone"?

"James and John had thought that in checking this man they had had in view their Lord's honor; they began to see that they were jealous for their own. They acknowledged their error, and accepted the reproof of Jesus, "Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in My name, that can lightly speak evil of Me." None who showed themselves in any way friendly to Christ were to be repulsed. There were many who had been deeply moved by the character and the work of Christ, and whose hearts were opening to Him in faith; and the disciples, who could not read motives, must be careful not to discourage these souls. When Jesus was no longer personally among them, and the work was left in their hands, they must not indulge a narrow, exclusive spirit, but manifest the same far-reaching sympathy which they had seen in their Master.  {DA 437.6} 

     The fact that one does not in all things conform to our personal ideas or opinions will not justify us in forbidding him to labor for God. Christ is the Great Teacher; we are not to judge or to command, but in humility each is to sit at the feet of Jesus, and learn of Him. Every soul whom God has made willing is a channel through which Christ will reveal His pardoning love. How careful we should be lest we discourage one of God's light bearers, and thus intercept the rays that He would have shine to the world!  {DA 438.1} 

     Harshness or coldness shown by a disciple toward one whom Christ was drawing--such an act as that of John in forbidding one to work miracles in Christ's name--might result in turning the feet into the path of the enemy, and causing the loss of a soul. Rather than for one to do this, said Jesus, "it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea." And He added, "If thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire. And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell." Mark 9:43-45, R. V.  {DA 438.2}  

I have often wondered why certain learned men, professors, and doctors of theology professing to believe the truth, make it a primary objective of their ministerial labor to denounce those not laboring according to their personal opinions.  Moreover, they then make it their own personal burden, to publicly condemn those who preach and teach the true message, who are not working according to, and following their system and structure of things, to which they are so vehemently loyal. Are they better than Christ, who never engaged in such activity, and rebuked those who did? Are they more wise than He who commanded his own laborers not to get in the way of this humble servant whom God himself had made willing?

The sad reality is that "Desire of Ages" reveals that souls will be lost because of the words and actions of such rash individuals. They will stand condemned in the judgement for two reasons: one, the lightbearers they discouraged, and two, the souls who could have been reached and were not.  Christ saw the value of a soul.  Do we today value our own personal ideas and methodology relating to God's work, more than the souls of men perishing in darkness? Such rash behavior, certainly doesn't seem to be in harmony with Christ's methods and character.

In Closing, I say to you, learned doctor and lettered professor, "You who have taken up precious time through the use of the modern mediums that the Lord has given for the edification of the church, and for the dispensing of the gospel to the world, to offset the channels through which Christ reveals "His pardoning love," "How dare you stand between heaven and earth that you might intercept the rays, that Christ would have shine upon the world and his people. These rays of truth might very well not shine through, because of your discouragement and your forbidding of Christ's humble servants, and thus turning the feet of precious souls into the enemies path. You would be wise to consider the counsel of another learned Dr., Gamiliel in Acts 5 who when probation had not yet closed on the Jewish church, advised that perhaps, they might be "fighting against God," by condeming the followers of Jesus of Nazereth. Unlike yourself, he was prudent enough to hold back, so that they may exercise patience to be absolutely certain that they were not in conflict with heaven itself. Yet, instead of this, you have become a modern day Dr. Johann Eck . Indeed you are doing the work of a pope, and the Lord is not glorified, and body of Christ is not edified in your words and deeds. Cease your actions now, before it is too late, and let your narrow and exclusive ideas concerning the Lord's work, (not yours) bow before the throne of Divine Omnipotence."

     Sr. White; why is every canvasser working for Bible Readings? I was canvassing for Vol. IV. but the president of our conference advised me to take Bible Readings. I received a rich blessing in canvassing for Vol. IV. I had success, and thought I would throw my whole energy into the work of bringing that book before the people. Every one who bought it was pleased with it, and some purchased a second copy to give to their friends. But I was told that all the canvassers were working for Bible Readings, and as this seemed to be the order of things, I took that book. Would it not be pleasing to the Lord for me again to take up Vol. IV?  {1888 657.3} 

     I certainly mistake our canvassers, if with proper instruction--having the matter set before them in its true bearings-- they would choose to give the field entirely to Bible Readings, to the neglect of Vol. IV. If it should prove that they will not receive counsel, if they are unwilling to do the work so essential at this time,-- to bring before the people the very books that the world should have,-- then there is only [one] course left for me; that is, to raise and train a company of canvassers for this special work,-- men and women who shall work not merely to please themselves, not merely for gain, but to do the work of God, to bring before the people the warnings of God to them. This I proposed to do some time since, but was urged to wait a little. Some of the leaders in the canvassing work felt that it would not be the right thing for me to have a separate canvassing company organized, that it would throw things into confusion. Then the promise was given that last spring the canvass for Vol. IV should be pushed as that for Bible Readings had been. I believe that our brethren meant to do just as they said; but why did they not do it? I waited, but nothing has been done. Now if the leading brethren give it as a hopeless task, I will wait no longer for them to turn the tide. I still believe that those who are working in the canvassing field will see their duty when the situation is fairly placed before them.  {1888 657.4}

The apostle Peter clearly states,

“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.” 2 Peter 1:12

There are three major periods in scripture that can be identified as times for the proclamation of the Present Truth. The time period between Enoch and Noah was the first. It was then that the flood message was being proclaimed. That was the present truth for that particular time. The next period was the time period between John the Baptist and Jesus the Messiah. The present truth for that time was the arrival of the Messiah to fulfill the Old Testament prophecies. Then the final period of present truth is the time that we are now living, which is between the preaching of William Miller and the final generation. This present truth places all of the principles of scripture in an end time setting, and is proclaimed in the time period described as the “hour of God’s judgment.” These principles are derived from the three angel’s messages of Revelation 14:6-12. This present truth involves teachings concerning the second coming (as described in Daniel and Revelation), and judgment of 1844, the magnification of the Law of God, the non-immortality of the soul, the Sabbath, Emphasis upon the Spirit of Prophecy manifested through Ellen White,  and victory over sin in this present life by Christ’s righteousness. It involves the latter rain, the loud cry, the seal of God and the Shaking as derived from the third message.  Since John the Baptist was a type of those proclaiming the message, it includes the Elijah-John the Baptist message of health, dress, and education reform.

The question that we must ask now is, “are you being established in it?” Also, what will keep the people of God from being established in it?

“I was shown the necessity of those who believe we are having the last message of mercy, being separate from those who are daily imbibing new errors. I saw that young and old should not attend their assemblies; for it is wrong to encourage them by attending their meetings while they teach error that is poisonous, and death to the soul, and teach for doctrines the commandments of men. And the influence is not good. If God has delivered us from such darkness and error, we should stand fast in the liberty wherewith he has set us free, and rejoice in the truth. God is displeased with those who go to listen to error, when they are not obliged to; for unless he sends us to these meetings, where error is forced home to the people by the power of the will, he will not keep us. The angels cease their watchful care over us, and we are left to the buffetings of the enemy, to be darkened and weakened by him, and the power of his evil angels; and the light around us becomes contaminated with the darkness.

     I saw that we had no time to throw away in listening to fables. Our minds should not be thus diverted; but should be occupied with the present truth, and seeking wisdom that we may obtain a more thorough knowledge of our position; that with meekness we may give a reason of our hope from the Scriptures. While the mind is occupied in hearing false doctrines, and dangerous error, pressed upon the hearers, it cannot be dwelling upon the truth which is to fit and prepare the house of Israel to stand in the day of the Lord.”   Early Writings 124

This statement it is often said to apply only to those going into Sunday churches. However we do not read this in this statement, and we cannot place our own assumption upon inspiration. Secondly, God is not a respecter of persons. He does not have double standards. This principle is a broad principle that deals with ways that we can become “contaminated” with darkness. You may say, “I know the truth.” So did Eve when she went to listen to the first error. Yes, this applies to all denominations including Sabbath keeping ones. We are not to go to them when error is preached or  upheld.

What are the common errors taught among Sabbath keepers that undermine present truth?  These would include errors such as, “forget about the doctrines and let us just love”, “self-esteem”, “the 2300 days are not essential to understand”, “obedience is legalism”, “health reform is legalism”, “dress reform is legalism”, “Everything was accomplished at the cross” thus making the most holy place ministry irrelevant,  “Ellen White is “lesser” inspired and informed”, “those who often quote Ellen White are legalists”, “victory over sin and holiness cannot be achieved in this life”, “Jesus by his very nature had an advantage over us”, “worldly music in the house of worship is good”, “there is no literal sanctuary in heaven”,  “women’s rights must be upheld through women’s ordination”,  and “let us not focus on the second coming, we have been doing that for years.”

The eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil came as a result of listening to error. The serpent told eve, “ye shall not surely die.” That was the beginning of the fall of our first parents. Eve had a choice to either continue listening or to walk away. She chose to continue listening.

What happens when we continue to go and listen. The statement says that “it is poisonous and death to the soul”, we have no time to throw away, our minds are diverted when they should be occupied with “present truth”, we should seek wisdom to gain a more thorough knowledge of present truth, and that our minds should be dwelling on how to prepare our hearts to stand in the day of the lord. The angel’s ultimately will cease their watchful care over us when we continue to attend.

This principle is not a new principle, because it is as old as scripture itself. The following scriptures were given at a time when Sunday keeping was unheard of:

”Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” Romans 16:17

A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Titus 3:10

 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.  9As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Gal. 1:7-9.

I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. Jeremiah 15:17

The following statement brings greater clarity to the matter of listening to error, and why Ellen White speaks so strongly against it,

"Error is never harmless. It never sanctifies, but always brings confusion and dissension. It is always dangerous." Counsels to Writers and Editors, 47

Should such gatherings be supported by financial means, be it tithe or offering?  Notice the following:

There are fearful woes for those who preach the truth,  262 but are not sanctified by it, and also for those who consent to receive and maintain the unsanctified to minister to them in word and doctrine. {1T 261.3}

God is displeased not only when we attend, but also when we give encouragement, consent and maintenance.

This instruction that the Lord has given at this time is just as important as the counsel that he gave to Adam and Eve concerning the forbidden fruit. In the 24th chapter of Matthew we find the two servants. One is a wise servant, and the other is unfaithful.

The servants are watchmen. They emerge in history after the destruction of Jerusalem, pagan and papal persecutions, and the signs in the sun moon and stars.  The faithful watchman gave the call for the virgins to go forth to meet the bridegroom. This is why the bible says, “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins..” The faithful watchmen were not among the official clergymen of the day. They, like Miller, were called from the plow. Who are the unfaithful watchmen? Do they still exist? The following reveals how they have and will exist. We also find a picture of their fate.

In the ninth chapter of Ezekiel is portrayed the fate of the men of responsibility who have not glorified God by faithfulness and integrity. Read this chapter. Notice especially verses four to six: [quoted]. At the appointed time, the Lord God of Israel will do His work most thoroughly.  -184- {18MR 183.5}

     The thirty-third chapter of Ezekiel is an outline of the work that God approves. Those in positions of sacred trust, those honored of God by being appointed to stand as watchmen on the walls of Zion, are in every respect to be all that is embraced in the meaning of the word watchmen. They are to be ever on guard against the dangers threatening the spiritual life and health and prosperity of God's heritage. {18MR 184.1}

Ezekiel’s ancient men and the unfaithful watchmen of Ezekiel 33 are one and the same.

The crisis is fast approaching. The rapidly swelling figures show that the time for God's visitation has about come. Although loath to punish, nevertheless He will punish, and that speedily. Those who walk in the light will see signs of the approaching peril; but they are not to sit in quiet, unconcerned expectancy of the ruin, comforting themselves with the belief that God will shelter His people in the day of visitation. Far from it. They should realize that it is their duty to labor diligently to save others, looking with strong faith to God for help. "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." {5T 209.2}

     The leaven of godliness has not entirely lost its power. At the time when the danger and depression of the church are greatest, the little company who are standing in the light will be sighing and crying for the abominations that are done in the land. But more especially will their prayers arise in behalf  210
of the church because its members are doing after the manner of the world. {5T 209.3}

     The earnest prayers of this faithful few will not be in vain. When the Lord comes forth as an avenger, He will also come as a protector of all those who have preserved the faith in its purity and kept themselves unspotted from the world. It is at this time that God has promised to avenge His own elect which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them. {5T 210.1}

At the end God punishes the unfaithful church that has developed a love for the world. The ancient men are the first. This means that they suffer the greatest. The ancient men should have been watchmen blowing the trumpet.

     The command is: "Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof." These sighing, crying ones had been holding forth the words of life; they had reproved, counseled, and entreated. Some who had been dishonoring God repented and humbled their hearts before Him. But the glory of the Lord had departed from Israel; although many still continued the forms of religion, His power and presence were lacking. {5T 210.2}

     In the time when His wrath shall go forth in judgments, these humble, devoted followers of Christ will be distinguished from the rest of the world by their soul anguish, which is expressed in lamentation and weeping, reproofs and warnings. While others try to throw a cloak over the existing evil, and excuse the great wickedness everywhere prevalent, those who have a zeal for God's honor and a love for souls willnot hold their peace to obtain favor of any. Their righteous souls are vexed day by day with the unholy works and conversation of the unrighteous. They are powerless to stop the rushing torrent of iniquity, and hence they are filled with grief and alarm. They mourn before God to see religion despised in the very homes of those who have had great light. They lament and afflict their souls because pride, avarice, selfishness, and deception of almost every kind are in the church. The Spirit  211 of God, which prompts to reproof, is trampled underfoot, while the servants of Satan triumph. God is dishonored, the truth made of none effect. {5T 210.3}

     The class who do not feel grieved over their own spiritual declension, nor mourn over the sins of others, will be left without the seal of God. The Lord commissions His messengers, the men with slaughtering weapons in their hands: "Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house." {5T 211.1}

     Here we see that the church--the Lord's sanctuary--was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men, those to whom God had given great light and who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people, had betrayed their trust. They had taken the position that we need not look for miracles and the marked manifestation of God's power as in former days. Times have changed. These words strengthen their unbelief, and they say: The Lord will not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in judgment. Thus "Peace and safety" is the cry from men who will never again lift up their voice like a trumpet to show God's people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. These dumb dogs that would not bark are the ones who feel the just vengeance of an offended God. Men, maidens, and little children all perish together. {5T 211.2}

The unfaithful watchmen-ancient men, are those who cry peace and safety. “My lord delayeth His coming,” they proclaim. They do not lift their voices as trumpets.

The abominations for which the faithful ones were sighing and crying were all that could be discerned by finite eyes, but by far the worst sins, those which provoked the jealousy of the pure and holy God, were unrevealed. The great Searcher of hearts knoweth every sin committed in secret by the workers of iniquity. These persons come to feel secure in their deceptions and, because of His long-suffering, say that the Lord  212 seeth not, and then act as though He had forsaken the earth. But He will detect their hypocrisy and will open before others those sins which they were so careful to hide. {5T 211.3}

     No superiority of rank, dignity, or worldly wisdom, no position in sacred office, will preserve men from sacrificing principle when left to their own deceitful hearts. Those who have been regarded as worthy and righteous prove to be ring-leaders in apostasy and examples in indifference and in the abuse of God's mercies. Their wicked course He will tolerate no longer, and in His wrath He deals with them without mercy. {5T 212.1}

The ancient men sacrifice principle to gain the favor of the world.

     It is with reluctance that the Lord withdraws His presence from those who have been blessed with great light and who have felt the power of the word in ministering to others. They were once His faithful servants, favored with His presence and guidance; but they departed from Him and led others into error, and therefore are brought under the divine displeasure. {5T 212.2}

The day of God's vengeance is just upon us. The seal of God will be placed upon the foreheads of those only who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land. Those who link in sympathy with the world are eating and drinking with the drunken and will surely be destroyed with the workers of iniquity. "The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil." {5T 212.3}

     Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the living God or be cut down by the destroying weapons. Already a few drops of God's wrath have fallen upon the earth; but when the seven last plagues shall be poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation, then it will be forever too late to repent and find shelter. No atoning blood will then wash away the stains of sin. {5T 212.4}

The following description shows how the unfaithful watchmen suffer greater than those who are not acting as spiritual guardians.

Many of the wicked were greatly enraged as they suffered the effects of the plagues. It was a scene of fearful agony. Parents were bitterly reproaching their children, and children their parents, brothers their sisters, and sisters their brothers. . . . The people turned upon their ministers with bitter hate and reproached them, saying, "You have not warned us. You told us that all the world was to be converted, and cried, Peace, peace, to quiet every fear that was aroused. You have not told us of this hour; and those who warned us of it you declared to be fanatics and evil men, who would ruin us." But I saw that the ministers did not escape the wrath of God. Their suffering was tenfold greater than that of their people. {Mar 271.4}

Not long ago a very impressive scene passed before me. I saw an immense ball of fire falling among some beautiful mansions, causing their instant destruction. I heard some one say, "We knew that the judgments of God were coming upon the earth, but we did not know that they would come so soon." Others said, "You knew? Why then did you not tell us. We did not know." On every side I heard such words spoken. {RH, November 24, 1904 par. 1}

Let church-members bear in mind that the fact that their names are registered on the church books will not save them. They must show themselves approved of God, workmen that need not to be ashamed. Day by day they are to build their characters in accordance with Christ's directions. They are to abide in him, constantly exercising faith in him. Thus they will grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ,--wholesome, cheerful, grateful Christians, led by God, step by step, into clearer and still clearer light. {RH, November 24, 1904 par. 15}

     Those who do not gain this experience will be among the ones whose voices will one day be raised in the bitter lamentation, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved. Why did I not flee to the stronghold for refuge? Why have I trifled with my soul's salvation, and done despite to the Spirit of grace?" {RH, November 24, 1904 par. 16}

Study the ninth chapter of Ezekiel. These words will be literally fulfilled; yet the time is passing, and the people are asleep. They refuse to humble their souls and to be converted. Not a great while longer will the Lord bear with the people who have such great and important truths revealed to them but who refuse to bring these truths into their individual experience. The time is short. God is calling. Will you hear? Will you receive His message? Will you be converted before it is too late? Soon, very soon, every case will be decided for eternity.--Letter 106, 1909.

Many of the opposers of God's truth, devise mischief in their heads upon their beds, and in the day, they carry out their mischief and wicked devices, to put down the truth, and get something new to interest, and take the minds of their people, and divert them from the precious, all-important truth. I saw that the priests who are leading on their flock to death, are soon to be arrested in their dreadful career. The plagues of God are coming, and after one or two 45 has fallen, and they are tormented with the plagues, it is not enough; for all this, his hand is stretched out still, and will not be brought to himself again, until his purposes are fully accomplished, and they will be led to worship at the saints' feet, and acknowledge that God has loved them, because they held fast the truth, and kept God's commandments. And his hand is stretched out still in wrath and justice, and he will not rest from his anger, until the hireling priests and all the unrighteous are destroyed from the earth. {ExV54 44.3}

Laughable messages have been heard on the subject strictly for entertainment purposes. However as we take a closer look at the message contained in the book of Ezekiel, we find that there is much more serious content for reflection contained in its sacred pages.

The first question is: What generation does the prophet Ezekiel speak to?

“And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth? Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord God; I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision…” Ezekiel 12:23

 “Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off” Ezekiel 12:27

Ezekiel saw our generation. Though his words had application for his times, his visions were less for his day and more for ours. “The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision” were his words. Ezekiel’s generation did not see the effects or the fulfillment of every vision.

Can it be that Ezekiel saw the second coming of Jesus?

Ezekiel indeed saw the second coming of Jesus, though he did not understand the full light of this great subject as it has been revealed to us today.

“Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: And behold, the glory of the God of Israel come from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.” Ezekiel 43:1,2

Ezekiel stated here that he saw the glory of God coming from the “way of the east”, and that his voice was as the noise of many waters, and also that the whole earth shined with the glory of God.

Matt 24:27 tells us,

“For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

When Jesus comes, he will be seen coming out of the eastern sky, and every person on earth will see him on that day. Ezekiel indeed represents those who will see Jesus coming in the east.

“For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth shall shake at my presence and the mountains shall be thrown down and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground…Thus I will magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know I am the Lord.” Ezekiel 39:23

Didn’t John see in Revelation the mountains disappearing at the great earthquake at the coming of the Lord.  Ezekiel sees what the final generation will see as did John.

It will be clear to any serious reader that Ezekiel is speaking to this generation.

The second question for consideration is, “What do the bones in Ezekiel 37 represent?”

“Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts” Ezekiel 37:11

The bones represent the “house of Israel”, which today represents the church. See Gal 3:29 and Romans 9.

Therefore just before the second coming of Jesus, the church will be in the same state spiritually as these dry bones.

What does it mean to be spiritually dead?

“And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins: Wherein in time ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” Ephesians 2:1.2

These dry bones are a symbol of church that is walking “according to the course of this world.” It is a worldly church conducting itself after the ways of the world, because of sin in its midst, and its willful trespasses of the principles of God.

Did the bible ever speak about a church that was dead? Indeed it does.

“And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou has a name that thou livest, and art dead.” Revelation 3:1

The church of Sardis represents that time period just before the Second Advent Movement of the “Philadelphia” church. It was the church of the protestant reformation. This church was becoming more and more worldly just before the arrival of the Second Coming message of watchfulness.

How would that message bring a dead church to life (those who remain.)?

“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased…And he said, Go thy way Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.” Daniel 12:4,9

The last portions of the book of Daniel’s prophecies were to be closed to the understanding until the time of the end. This book began to be opened during the last lap of the protestant reformation in the late 1700’s and the early 1800’s.

What was the church called upon to do with the open book at the time of the end?

“And he said unto me, take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey…And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again…” Revelation 10:10,11

John was here representing the Second Advent Movement, which was the remnant that came out of Sardis. Eating the book symbolized how they studied and prophesied. The sweet taste was the prospect of the joy of Christ Second Coming, and the bitter feeling/taste, was the disappointment of 1844 when he didn’t come.

What did God tell Ezekiel to do to those dry bones?

“Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.”

The question was asked concerning the church of the protestant reformation, “Can these bones live?” Not until they heard the prophecies from Ezekiel who represented the Second Advent Movement. Prophesy upon these bones.

How was Ezekiel able to prophesy upon the bones?

“Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll. And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness” Ezekiel 3:1,2

He had eaten/studied the open book, symbolizing the Advent Movement. It was also to him/them as honey for sweetness. This is how he was able to preach prophecy to the bones/dead church of Protestantism. He was able the to bring revival to the “few in Sardis” that had not been defiled. He was then able to “strengthen” those who remained.

The Holy Spirit attended the preaching of Ezekiel thus causing the dead church/dry bones to come alive.

“Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:” Ez. 37:5

“So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, and exceeding great army.” Ez. 37:10

Revival came to the Remnant in Sardis as the Holy Spirit attended the prophesying of men like Miller, Irving, and Wolff.

We have now come to a time where the remnant of the Advent Movement have become as dead man’s bones. Once again the call has come to “eat the little book” and to prophesy again. Why? Because the church has pursued a worldly course and has become dead in trespasses and sins. Revival and Reformation is our greatest need.

The time has come to “prophesy again.” The Holy Spirit will attend the words and dedication of the faithful messengers.

When the books of Daniel and Revelation are better understood, believers will have an entirely different religious experience. They will be given such glimpses of the open gates of heaven that heart and mind will be impressed with the character that all must develop in order to realize the blessedness which is to be the reward of the pure in heart. The Lord will bless all who will seek humbly and meekly to understand that which is revealed in the Revelation. This book contains so much that is large with immortality and full of glory that all who read and search it earnestly receive the blessing to those "that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein." One thing will certainly be understood from the study of Revelation--that the connection between God and His people is close and decided. {FLB 345.3}

     Let us give more time to the study of the Bible. We do not understand the Word as we should. The book of Revelation opens with an injunction to us to understand the instruction that it contains. . . . When we . . . understand what this book means to us, there will be seen among us a great revival. 346

]]>Mon, 08 Jun 2009 15:51:00 -0800http://www.ericbettsministries.com/1/post/2009/06/startling-notices-and-a-few-prophetic-principles.htmlThe year 2008 was a notable year for the distribution of documentary video and “secret info” about future events and what the government was planning to do.  Many claim that these reports are simply proclaiming prophecy, while it is difficult to find evidence of such “inside info” in the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy. Much of what is actually rumor and conjecture is passed off as prophecy.

Part of what makes these videos so popular is the excitement of having “the scoop.” Some in Adventist circles take great delight obtaining and helping to circulate information that no one will ever obtain unless they view that particular report. The refrain is often, “It’s got to be true; they have the documentation.” Yet people enter the country every day illegally with documentation that appears valid. When you go to court, and the defense attorney has his client on the stand, it sounds like he has a concrete and credible case. You can almost guarantee that they are innocent based all the evidence. That is, until the cross-examination approaches the witness stand, and it doesn't seem so credible any more. How then do we judge the end times?  If we read our bibles daily, study bible prophecy, seek to share and study with others, live faithfully and obedient, we will know where we are in prophecy without sitting for hours listening to so called "insider information."

In the 1990’s there may have been three or four of these types of circulations a year, but now with the advance of technology, we find about four per week sent out for distribution. Just prior to Y2k, many reported about how the military would take over America under President Clinton, and that he would impose martial law and remain president. It was also reported that the LA gangs were going to be used as an on the ground military force. In 2008 it was predicted based on secret information obtained by expert researchers that during the summer of 2008 the following would occur; we would go into a great depression, violence would erupt in all the major cities, martial law would be imposed, no one would be able to leave the places where they lived, no travelling would be allowed, The presidential election would be cancelled, President Bush would remain in office because of the state of emergency, and that many would be placed in concentration camps.

These types of “startling notices” are not new to our times. The circulation of reports designed to create excitement and alarm existed in Ellen Whites’ day as well. Most of them were passed off as prophecy about to be fulfilled, which brought a negative image to the world concerning Mrs. Whites’ writings. There are several problem areas as it relates to many of these documentaries and reports.

They are detrimental to the progress of the everlasting gospel, because they open the door to fanaticism.

"Not many years ago, a brother laboring in New York City published some very startling notices regarding the destruction of that city. I wrote immediately to the ones in charge of the work there, saying that it was not wise to publish such notices; that thus an excitement might be aroused which would result in a fanatical movement, hurting the cause of God. It is enough to present the truth of the Word of God to the people. Startling notices are detrimental to the progress of the work." {RH, July 5, 1906 par. 12

"I was not favorably impressed with the startling notices of your meetings. They savor of fanaticism. . . . Do not issue notices so worded as to create an alarm. When the Lord is ready for the advanced denunciation of wicked cities, He will let His people know. But this will be after these wicked cities have had an opportunity to hear the word and to receive the word that is unto life eternal." {Ev 130.4}

" Our work now is to enlighten and educate minds as to the sayings of the Scripture. Doors are now opened for the entrance of truth. Avail yourselves of the opportunity to reach those who have never heard the truth. Explain the truth, as did Christ, in many ways, by figures and parables. And Elder _____'s striking presentation of the truth by the means of charts may be followed to advantage. Let these things speak to the senses of the people. Do not encourage anything like a fanatical movement. Satan works in this line, seeking to draw away disciples after him by representations that, if it were possible, will deceive the very elect.-"-Letter 17

"I assure you that we are praying for you and for the work in New York City. But please do withdraw those startling notices of your meetings. If a fanatical wave should strike New York now, Satan would work upon human minds, setting in operation a work that none of you are prepared to handle. It is not excitement that we need at this time, but calm, steady, devoted effort for the education of the people."--Letter 17, 1902. {Ev 131.3}

They tend to expressions that can easily be interpreted as antagonism toward the civil authorities. It is possible that such can bring unnecessary misunderstandings as to who we are as a people. It can encourage wrong sentiments, particularly those not of our faith.

"By some of our brethren many things have been spoken and written that are interpreted as expressing antagonism to government and law. It is a mistake thus to lay ourselves open to misunderstanding. It is not wise to find fault continually with what is done by the rulers of government. It is not our work to attack individuals or institutions. We should exercise great care lest we be understood as putting ourselves in opposition to the civil authorities. It is true that our warfare is aggressive, but our weapons are to be those found in a plain "Thus saith the Lord." Our work is to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God. We should not be turned aside to lines that will encourage controversy, or arouse antagonism in those not of our faith." {CW 68.1}

" We should not work in a manner that will mark us out as seeming to advocate treason. We should weed out from our writings and utterances every expression, that, taken by itself, could be so misrepresented as to make it appear antagonistic to law and order. Everything should be carefully considered, lest we place ourselves on record as encouraging disloyalty to our country and its laws. We are not required to defy authorities. There will come a time when, because of our advocacy of Bible truth, we shall be treated as traitors; but let not this time be hastened by unadvised movements that stir up animosity and strife." {CW 68-69}

They potentially enable our adversaries and disseminate ammunition to be used to counteract the cause of present truth in the future.

"The time will come when unguarded expressions of a denunciatory character, that have been carelessly spoken or written by our brethren, will be used by our enemies to condemn us. These will not be used merely to condemn those who made the statements, but will be charged upon the whole body of Adventists. Our accusers will say that on such and such a day one of our responsible men said thus and so against the administration of the laws of this government. Many will be astonished to see how many things have been cherished and remembered that will give point to the arguments of our adversaries. Many will be surprised to hear their own words strained into a meaning that they did not intend them to have. Then let our workers be careful to speak guardedly at all times and under all circumstances. Let all beware lest by reckless expressions they bring on a time of trouble before the great crisis which is to try men's souls." {CW 69.1}

"The less we make direct charges against authorities and powers, the greater work we shall be able to accomplish, both in America and in foreign countries. Foreign nations will follow the example of the United States. Though she leads out, yet the same crisis will come upon our people in all parts of the world."  70 {CW 69.2}

They tend to distract from the advancement of the third angel’s message that we are commissioned and commanded to conduct.

"It is our work to magnify and exalt the law of God. The truth of God's holy word is to be made manifest. We are to hold up the Scriptures as the rule of life. In all modesty, in the spirit of grace, and in the love of God, we are to point men to the fact that the Lord God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord. {CW 70.1}

 In the name of the Lord we are to go forward, unfurling His banner, advocating His word. When the authorities command us not to do this work; when they forbid us to proclaim the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, then it will be necessary for us to say as did the apostles: "Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." Acts 4:19, 20." {CW 70.2}

One true prediction makes room for the reception of future false predictions.

The one prediction that came the closest to being true during the 2008 year was that which related to the economy. However, even Satan at times makes right predictions. See the witch of Endor and her consultation with King Saul. Since the election, new predictions and pronouncements have been introduced. One prediction coming to pass will keep you coming back for more. Of certainty, God is always 100% accurate in his revelation of future events.

If there is anything secretive that needs to be revealed, God will reveal it through inspiration.

“Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7

They contradict prophecy in many instances.

One recent report comes from one claiming to already be in hiding from authorities. This particular expert foretells a “Marxist Communistic Atheistic takeover of America”, and states that this must happen in order to fulfill prophecy. However, neither the Bible, nor Spirit of Prophecy speaks about such a thing as a fulfillment of prophecy. In fact the bible speaks in Revelation 13 and in “Great Controversy” about a well intentioned Christian Church movement in their demands upon the state that will bring about final events. This is what we are to be looking for; and not a Marxist takeover. Many who use what they claim as documentation, is actually fabrication. These are put together in such a way that it will easily convince the average viewer or reader, and those who do not study the prophecies.

When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result. {GC 445.1}

It is a church based movement that marches the world to the events preceding the Second Coming of Jesus.

The same report speaks against the introduction of Black History in educational lines to balance the European focus of history. It is stated that this is the fulfillment of what Ellen White says that the aim of the papacy to “undo all that Protestantism has done.” The implication is that Protestantism was a white European movement. Have we not read about the Ethiopians, the Abyssinians, and the Western African Sabbath-Keepers in “Great Controversy.” I am concerned that some are gleaning information from groups that are, should I say “respecters of persons” when it comes to philosophy.

It is not our work to spread the latest “inside scoop”; but to spread the word of truth like the leaves of autumn, as in Great Controversy, Patriarchs and Prophets, Steps to Christ, Desire of Ages, and invitations to attend meetings where present truth is preached. Thus the message of Jesus Second Coming, the call out of Babylon, the magnification of God’s Holy Law, and the invitation to receive the faith of Jesus will go forth like a tidal wave across the distant continents and Jesus will surely come.

Repeating the passage in inspiration;

Our work now is to enlighten and educate minds as to the sayings of the Scripture. Doors are now opened for the entrance of truth. Avail yourselves of the opportunity to reach those who have never heard the truth. Explain the truth, as did Christ, in many ways, by figures and parables. And Elder _____'s striking presentation of the truth by the means of charts may be followed to advantage. Let these things speak to the senses of the people.

The Bible tells us in Amos 3:7; "Surely the Lord God doeth nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets." Are we reading the testimonies?  Are we intelligent in regard to the pillars of our faith? Are these the source of our spiritual knowlege? Many who should know and understand present truth, are following documentaries on youtube in a soap opera type intensity as though these are the source of truth for God's people. Yes, there may be many things on these that are true, but everything that is true is not "the truth." The bible says  in John 17:17; "Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth." I have heard it said many a times that we cant trust the regular news, while the spirit of prophecy tells us...

"Troublous times are right upon us. The fulfilling of the signs of the times gives evidence that the day of the Lord is near at hand. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the future. Bold robberies are of frequent occurrence. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are committed on every hand. Men possessed of demons are taking the lives of men and women and little children. All these things testify that the coming of Christ is near at hand. . . . "{HP 342.2}

There are those who say, "you have got to watch this documentary to really see what the government is doing." Sure friends, the government is corrupt. However this is not the last message of mercy that we are to give to the world. The impression is given that the only ones who will see the signs are those who watch certain videos that reveal secret info. That must mean that a lot of people are going to be lost who did not have dvd players or televisions.

God does not tell us we better do some study and research into what the government is doing in order to see the signs. He does tell us if we do not study his word, and learn what we believe as people that we will be decieved. Every hour spent watching a documentary, is one less hour that we will have to study God's word to prepare our hearts for what is coming. The signs will not need to be researched. There will be enough happening in our every day world to tell us that He is coming soon. All through Matthew 24 Jesus says "and ye shall hear...", and "ye shall see..", and "there shall be..." The world around us will notify us of what is coming. These things should drive us to the study and the research of God's word.

It is true that we can't trust the regular news. However the spirit of prophecy says that we will see the signs and indicators in it. The implication is that I can trust Alex Jones and other experts in secret government info. The only thing that we can trust is God word. Newpapers get things wrong. Documentaries get things wrong. The Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy is never wrong.

"No one can blind himself to the terrible results of the drink traffic. The daily papers show that the wretchedness, the poverty, the crime, resulting from this traffic, are not cunningly devised fables, and that hundreds of men are growing rich off the pittances of the men they are sending to perdition by their drink business. The accounts that fill the daily papers are enough to move a heart of stone, and if the senses of our rulers were not perverted, they would see the necessity of doing away with this death-dealing traffic. O that a public sentiment might be created that would put an end to the drink business, close the public houses, and give their maddened victims an opportunity to reflect on eternal realities! "{PH132 8.3}

The solemn implication is, that it should be enough to move the "heart of stone."

"The Lord has a special work to do for us individually. As we see the wickedness of the world brought to light in the courts of justice and published in the daily papers, let us draw near to God, and by living faith lay hold of His promises, that the grace of Christ may be manifest in us. We may have an influence, a powerful influence, in the world. If the convicting power of God is with us, we shall be enabled to lead souls that are in sin to conversion." MYP 26.1

The Spirit of Prophecy acknowleges that the regular news leaves out a lot of information, but that there is enough there to preach about. We do not even need to research any further information about what is not being told.

 We are living in a time of lawlessness. It is described by the prophets: "Judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter." "By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood." Isa. 59:14; Hos. 4:2. While but a small part of the evil and corruption of our large cities is ever published, there is enough to make the daily papers a daily comment on these texts. {SW, March 1, 1909 par. 1}

 
Then she says that she wishes that we would take note of the daily papers in this country.

"I wish you could read the daily papers of this country, and notice the accounts of how men in responsible positions have dropped dead while traveling or while at some entertainment. Never have the deaths of wealthy men in high life been so frequent as of late. This is the result of a violation of nature's laws. Cause is being followed by effect. The life-forces are extinguished by indulgence. "Heart failure," say the physicians who attended these men at their death. Poor souls! They abused the Lord's wonderful machinery until it could endure no longer, and gave up the conflict. God does not work a miracle to keep in motion the machinery that is worn out by the abuse put upon it. " {7MR 56.1}

  In His warning message our Saviour has told us how it will be in the end of the world. "As the days of Noah were," He says, "so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." {7MR 56.2}

 Very plainly Christ saw that the condition of society would be in the future. He saw that self-indulgence would control men and women. What of the marriage relation today? Is it not perverted and defiled, made even as it was in Noah's day? Divorce after divorce is recorded in the daily papers. This is the marriage of which Christ speaks when He says that before the flood they were "marrying and giving in marriage." -57- {7MR 56.3}

 In Summary: Study God's word as never before. Learn what is the message of the hour that we may intelligently under the influence of the Holy Spirit tell it to the world. Take note of the signs as a warning signal, and stay in the scriptures for in them is life eternal.
